Ecoener cooperates with the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Planning Department for the removal of waste from the Los Rodeos Alto neighbourhood.

  • For 16 years, local residents have been demanding the dismantling of the illegal dump at Los Rodeos Alto.
  • Ecoener, which is well established in the area, is collaborating with the City Council in this initiative.
  • Ecoener is strongly committed to preserving the environment and contributing to the social development of the places where it operates.

In Los Rodeos Alto, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, 15 families have been living for more than 16 years without minimum conditions of habitability. The rubbish and abandoned household goods were piled up around the houses, turning them into a “breeding ground for rats” which, according to the neighbours, even entered the houses.

Ecoener found out about the situation of these families through complaints filed on social networks and has accepted the initiative of the Councillor for Tourism, Urban Planning and Environmental Policies, Alejandro Marichal, who has sought the altruistic collaboration of the company to carry out the work of removing the rubbish accumulated in the aforementioned neighbourhood.

The cleaning and rubbish removal work lasted three days, removing 75,000 kilos of rubbish and debris from the area, which had been illegally deposited in recent years, creating over time an area of accumulated rubbish which caused great discomfort to the residents of the area. The neighbours themselves have collaborated with these works, which, in addition to the removal by lorry, included the selection by type of waste and its transfer to legal landfill sites.

The councillor for Tourism, Town Planning and Environmental Policies thanked the company for the work carried out and the “gesture of humanity” they have made towards these families, as it was impossible for the municipal corporation to access and proceed with the clean-up as it was located on privately owned land. “The willingness to help, the use of machinery and Ecoener’s own staff who have been selflessly employed to help these families, is a gesture that should be thanked and recognised,” said the councillor.

This initiative, which seeks to improve living conditions in the municipality, is in line with the social commitment and development of the communities that host Ecoener projects. Thus, committed to the Sustainable Development Goals, Ecoener is an active part of the 2030 Agenda, through forms of local action that contribute to achieving the goals of the Agenda.

Ecoener is one of the largest renewable energy generators on the islands, has 7 wind farms in the area and plans to continue developing this type of facility, which reduces CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and supplies household consumption with 100% renewable energy, as well as boosting the local economy and employment. It recently obtained 15% of the total aid granted for photovoltaic plants in the Canary Islands from the SolCan programme (Feder Funds). Of the 15 Ecoener projects selected, 12 were at the top of the list of more than 65 projects. These twelve projects are located in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

Ecoener’s vice-president, Fernando Rodríguez, commented: “Sustainability is a priority for us and our commitment is firm: to preserve the environment and contribute to social development. We work by listening and respecting, so it is a great satisfaction for us to support the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Council in this social action, which translates into an improvement in the living conditions of many families”.
