Ecoener to supply the entire island of La Gomera with renewable wind energy
- The facilities have a capacity of 12 MW and entail an investment of €17 million.
- The new wind farms will begin operations this year and will position La Gomera as a 100% sustainable island.
- The project strengthens Ecoener’s leadership in renewable energy production in the Canary Islands.
San Sebastián de La Gomera, 27 June – Ecoener, the Galician multinational renewable energy operator, is to supply the entire island of La Gomera with 100% sustainable energy thanks to five new wind farms currently under construction.
The facilities, which will boast a total capacity of 12 MW and an investment of almost €17 million, will strengthen Ecoener’s position as a renewable energy leader in the Canary Islands, where the company has been operating for 20 years.
Ecoener Chairman Luis de Valdivia highlighted “the importance of the Canary Islands in the company’s portfolio of assets” and added that “it is an honour for our company to be able to contribute to the La Gomera 100% Sustainable project, promoted by the Island Council and the Canary Islands Regional Government”.
Ecoener already has 81 MW in production in the Canary Islands and plans to install a further 47 MW in the coming months — including 12 MW on La Gomera — to reach a total of 128 MW by the end of the year.
The group’s investments in the Canary Islands since 2020 amount to €85 million. In 2022 alone, planned investments in all Canary Island facilities stand at €38.7 million.
The new wind farms on La Gomera have the capacity to supply renewable energy to almost 11,000 households, which exceeds current demand
on the island, and will avoid the emission of more than 23,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, a significant contribution to the total decarbonisation of the Canary Islands by 2040.
Located in the municipality of San Sebastián de la Gomera, the wind farms will become operational in 2022 and will be equipped with the latest developments with regard to both energy efficiency improvements and environmental protection. In addition, the wind farms will be fitted with Enercon E-82 E4 wind turbines and assembly is scheduled to begin after the foundations are completed.
The presentation ceremony for the project, held in San Sebastián de La Gomera, was attended by the President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, along with the Head of the Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning Department, José Antonio Valbuena, the President of the Island Council of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, and the Mayor of San Sebastián de La Gomera, Adasat Reyes, among other authorities and representatives of business and social organisations on the island.

Ecoener operates in 10 countries in Europe, America and Africa. In the Americas, the Galician multinational renewable energy group is developing projects in the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Panama, among other countries, in line with the company’s business plan.
Its portfolio of assets in Spain currently consists of 7 hydroelectric power plants, 13 photovoltaic power plants and 9 wind farms. The company plans to invest more than €212 million over the course of 2022 (€51.8 million in 2021), of which €70.7 million relates to projects that will enter into commercial operation in 2023.
