Ecoener, committed to Europe, to build 350 MW of renewables in Greece

  • The company is progressing with its international expansion plan and will invest €300 million in the Greek market.
  • Ecoener’s Chairman, Luis de Valdivia, appreciates “the confidence of the Greek government in the company’s plans, where we intend to stay and increase the number of megawatts.”
  • The first projects are expected to be Ready to Build by the end of 2025.

A Coruña, 24 January 2024.- Ecoener moves forward with its international expansion plan and will invest around €300 million in the Greek market.

The company, established in Greece through its subsidiary Ecoener Hellas in March 2023, is developing a renewable portfolio of 350 MW in the country for which it has obtained the first administrative authorisation.

“We appreciate the confidence of the Greek government in Ecoener’s projects. It is a country where we intend to stay and increase the number of megawatts of renewable energy,” says Luis de Valdivia, CEO of Ecoener.

Projects in different regions

The Greek government has just granted the first administrative licence for the first 10 projects that Ecoener plans to develop in the country.

Two of the projects in this new portfolio are further ahead: A 42MW wind farm and a 50MW photovoltaic power station that will be Ready to Build by the end of 2025 and are scheduled to be connected to the grid in the first half of 2027.

On the other hand, Ecoener has eight additional photovoltaic solar projects in the country with a capacity of 272MW, which have also been granted the first licence and will be ready to build in the first half of 2026. These eight photovoltaic solar plants will have a storage system with batteries to better integrate them into the Greek electricity grid.

The new facilities will be built in the regions of Epirus, Central Greece, Thessaly, Western Macedonia, and Central Macedonia.

All of these are greenfield projects, which means they are designed, developed, and processed from scratch until their subsequent management and operation, and are 100% owned by the company.

Energy transition in Greece

Ecoener has set eyes on Greece because this market has a lot of experience in renewables.

Greece has a National Energy and Climate Plan that sets a goal of 23.5GW of installed capacity by 2030, which amounts to 44% of the country’s total power production.

Apart from Greece, Ecoener already has operating offices in Europe (Italy, Poland, and Romania).

Growth in other markets

Last November, Ecoener opened its first two photovoltaic power stations in the Dominican Republic –Cumayasa 1 and 2, with a combined power of 97 MW– and expects to close 2024 with five photovoltaic plants in operation in the country, with a generation capacity of 279 MW. Ecoener’s investment programme to develop new projects in the Dominican Republic amounts to $289 million.

At the moment, Ecoener has 341MW in operation and 352 under construction.
