Ecoener collaborates with The La Gomera Functional Diversity Association
• Higher secondary level education students studying renewable energies at IES San Sebastián de La Gomera also visited the facilities.
• Ecoener is rolling out an ambitious social commitment programme in the Canary Islands to undertake cultural, sporting and social inclusion initiatives, among others.
La Gomera, 6 July 2023.- Fifteen young people from the La Gomera Functional Diversity Association made and installed 75 windbreaks to protect the native species used in the revegetation work underway at the five wind farms that Ecoener has been operating in the Canary Islands since March.
LoThe young people, who attended the inauguration of the plants and visited them recently, have been instrumental in an ambitious environmental regeneration and recovery programme being carried out jointly by the nursery of the La Gomera provincial government, the La Gomera Functional Diversity Association and Ecoener at the sites where the wind farms are located.
More than a thousand native plants were planted during the revegetation initiative, covering a total surface area of 21,000 square metres. The species used in this project include verode, sweet tabaiba, lavender and Canary Island daisy. The windbreaks were handmade by the young people at the workshops of their activity centres using the strings from banana tree trunks. The string is cut and separated into sheets to make the windbreaks, which are held together by thread obtained from the string itself.
The Functional Diversity Association was founded as a non-profit organisation in 1984 by the parents of young people with different types of functional diversity to support their full social inclusion. The organisation has two activity centres with 40 places each in Vallehermoso and San Sebastián, on the island of La Gomera. The activity centres are intended to support the young people’s education and social integration, offering a range of activities to facilitate social inclusion, especially in a professional context.
Thirteen students from IES San Sebastián de La Gomera, who are in their first and second year of secondary education studying renewable energies, visited Ecoener’s wind farms, where they learned about the construction process and were able to take a look inside a wind turbine.
Commitment to the Canary Islands
Ecoener is rolling out an ambitious social contribution programme at all sites where it has projects in operation, both in Spain and internationally.
In particular, the Company is involved in a major environmental recovery effort in the Canary Islands. In addition to the revegetation work underway at the wind farms in La Gomera, a vegetation barrier stretching almost 2,000 metres has been planted at the renewable energy production complex in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, as well as an irrigation system using regenerated water from a nearby wastewater treatment plant.
Ecoener also collaborates with various cultural and educational associations to support the organisation of cultural and recreational events. As part of its commitment to young people and sport, it has sponsored the Castillo Football Club and the Castillo Basketball Club, promoting the “Campus Recre” programme through which, once a week, basketball classes are given during break times to children aged between 4 and 8 years, with more than 100 schoolchildren having benefited from this project.
