Agrivoltaics pilot project in the plant Cumayasa 1, Dominican Republic

The Cumayasa 1 photovoltaic power stations has started an agrivoltaics pilot project combining photovoltaic solar energy production with traditional activities, such as sheep herding. It is an innovative strategy that enables the harmonious coexistence of technology and agriculture.

Thanks to a local farmer, we have been able to start herding 50 sheep. One of the main benefits of this activity is that the sheep help  clear herbaceous plants from the facility, while at the same time providing the farmer with a place for his sheep to graze. Ecoener has built a small refuge with a trough.

By using the same area of land for both purposes, not only does this promote sustainability and reduce competition for land use, but it also generates additional benefits. The shade provided by the solar panels can offer shelter to animals, improve the quality of the grass and reduce heat stress. Furthermore, agrivoltaics represents a vision of the future in which energy production and agriculture can complement each other, contributing to food and energy security in a balanced and environmentally friendly way.
